Mazatlan
is located just south of the Tropic of
Cancer, so although it's in the tropics, temperatures are a little cooler than the
other tourist destinations further south. Many North Americans have now
settled in Mazatlan, partly because the climate is more suitable
for year-round living than other coastal cities. With a population over 500,000, it can
offer most of the amenities needed for year-round living. It is a very long
one day drive, or preferrably, a easy two day drive from the U.S.A. border.
Mazatlan is a busy deep sea port, and a popular destination for
fishers. Many charter boat companies offer a wide variety of fishing.
It also has the largest commercial shrimp fishery in Mexico.
Mazatlan is a comfortable place for North Americans to live. English is widely spoken, and there are many English speaking doctors and dentists, and the hospitals are excellent. Mazatlan is the terminus for the 18 hour ferry trips to La Paz on the Baja peninsula. These ferries carry cars, but commercial traffic is given priority, and in peak times it may be difficult to get your car aboard. One of the largest resort hotels in Mexico can be found here. More than 10,000 hotel rooms have been built in Mazatlan. A beautiful seaside boulevard runs for 10 miles, with many hotels, restaurants and stores to choose from.
