Ensenada is located a little more than one hour south of Tijuana by four lane divided toll highway. Duty free shopping, very low prescription drug prices, nice beaches nearby, and friendly people, make Ensenada a very popular destination for many Californians, particularly since the legal drinking age is only 18 years!
Education is big in Ensenada as it has the campus of the University of Baja California, the National University of Mexico's Institutes of Astronomy and Physics, a private School of Medicine, and a number of private research centers. Ensenada's population is estimated at 220,000, including about 38,000 Americans and Canadians.
Rosarito Beach is almost commuting distance from San Diego. You can reach Rosarito Beach via a four lane divided highway from Tijuana.
Many of the residential areas are gated communities much like the communities north of the border. Most of the American residential areas are beachfront properties at prices much lower than state side. The beach here is one of the finest in Mexico. The population is estimated at 85,000 with perhaps 25,000 North Americans.
It is a wonderful place for strolling. Great restaurants abound. Although prices are higher here than many cities on the Mexican mainland, they are still a bargain by U.S. and Canadian standards. The weekends are busy, and in Ensenada many visitors party to the wee hours, but quiet residential areas can be found. Rosarito Beach is more of a residential community. Many fishers come here to enjoy the fabulous deep sea fishing, and surfing is popular too.
