Ixtapa is the tourist destination and Zihuatanejo a nearby town of approximately 70,000 people is more of a retirement town. Ixtapa has many modern resort and time share developments with all the usual amenities of Pacific Coast resorts. Zihuatanejo on the other hand is not quite as touristy, and may be a better place for retirement living.
They are located approximately 239 kilometers north of Acapulco, so they have the same basic tropical climate.
Ixtapa offers modern hotels and air conditioned shopping malls. Zihuatanejo offers vendor street stalls, and beachfront restaurants.
