La Paz and Loreto

La Paz (Peace), is the capital of Baja California Sur. It is not as popular with tourists as the Los Cabos corridor, but it offers much of the same facilities, without sacrificing it's colonial past. It has great shopping, a nice beach-front boulevard, old colonial buildings, and a relaxed atmosphere. It is probably the most 'Mexican' of the Baja cities, and for many people, it is their favorite city on the Baja. La Paz is famous for it's glorious sunsets.

North of the city are the towns of Loreto, a resort area just now beginning to become popular, and Mulege, a town already famous for it's diving spots. Near Mulege is Bahia de Concepcion, one of the best places in the world for diving, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. Protected clear water is the attraction.

The population of La Paz is estimated at 160,000. It reminds one of a typical city in southern France along the Mediteranean coast. A wide boulevard for walking and/or driving, with the beach on one side and open-air restaurants on the other. The boulevard extends for miles.

La Paz is the center of some of the world's best deep sea fishing. For many miles in either direction a great variety of game fish can be caught. Great scuba diving and snorkeling can be found in the area too, and the water is warm.

It has an international airport and is the terminus for Baja bus lines.
