Mayan Riviera

The Mayan Riviera or Riviera Maya is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. It is located south of Cancun.

The towns generally included in the Mayan Riviera are: Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Akumel, Kantenah, Puerto Aventuras, Tulum, Xpu Ha, Punta Bete, Punta Maroma, and Xcaret.

It used to be a quiet sparsely settled area, but now many fine hotels and destination resorts can be found along this coast. It is still much more laid-back than Cancun. Playa del Carmen is the central town and it is growing quickly into a major tourist destination. Great tourist shopping can be found here, and water sports of all kinds are readily available. Xcaret is a wonderful place to visit for a day. At Tulum you can view the ruins of the only coastal city built by the Mayans.
